Fighters of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance entered Kabul early on Tuesday to the sound of small-arms fire as dazed residents emerged from their homes to see Taliban bodies on the streets and looters plundering government offices.

``We have taken Kabul,'' shouted one jubilant opposition fighter as he stood with a group of fellow fighters on a street in the city center.

Their vehicles were plastered with photographs of their legendary leader, Ahmad Shah Masood, who was assassinated in a suicide attack just two days before the September 11 hijacked airliner attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon

A few bodies of Taliban fighters lay in the streets and sporadic small-arms fire clattered in pockets of the Afghan capital as the opposition Northern Alliance entered.

Several hundred U.S. Marines landed in southern Afghanistan near the last major Taliban stronghold of Kandahar and more troops would follow in the next few days

The arrival of the Marines, the United States' elite ground attack troops, heralded a final push to take Kandahar, power base of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar and last bastion of the movement after its northern redoubt of Kunduz crumbled before a Northern Alliance advance on Sunday.

Weary Afghan factions appeared close to agreeing on a power-sharing deal at talks in Germany on Saturday as U.S. Marines and Pashtun tribesmen dug in for what could be a desperate and bloody battle for the Taliban's last stronghold of Kandahar.

U.S. warplanes hit targets around the city where thousands of Taliban troops are believed to be concentrated and Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar raised the specter of fierce street battles by urging his men to fight to the death.

Taliban fighters began turning over their weapons in the southern city of Kandahar, their birthplace and last bastion, on Friday, an Afghan news agency reported.

The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) said the defenders of the ancient city had started handing in their guns to a joint commission of tribal elders, Islamic religious scholars and former Mujahideen commanders.

The peaceful handover of Kandahar was agreed on Thursday in negotiations between the Taliban and Hamid Karzai, a Pashtun tribal chief who is set to lead a new interim Afghan government.

With the strict Islamic Taliban militia driven from power in Afghanistan, Bush shifted the focus in the U.S. war on terrorism to stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

In a speech at the Citadel, a South Carolina military college, he said ``rogue states'' were the most likely sources of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and they would be treated as enemies if they aided ``terrorists.''

``America's next priority in the war on terrorism is to protect against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the means to deliver them,'' he said.

``We cannot accept and we will not accept states that harbor, finance, train or equip the agents of terror. Those nations that violate this principle will be regarded as hostile regimes. They have been warned, they are being watched, and they will be held to account,'' Bush said, without naming any countries.

Terror-Related Investigation

Terrorist attacks on Western civilians are justified because they live in democracies and are directly responsible for government policies that anger Arabs, Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s top lieutenant implies in the latest excerpt of his memoirs.

In the passages that appeared Tuesday in the London-based Arabic-language newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Ayman al-Zawahri says the West understands only ``the language of self-interest coupled with oppressive power.''

``If we want to make them understand our rights we have to speak to them in the language they understand,'' he said.

More than 3,000 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the Sept. 11 terror attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Al-Qaida, the organization headed by bin Laden and al-Zawahri, has been blamed for the attacks.

In his memoirs, al-Zawahri accuses the West of the ``crime'' of creating Israel.

``In undertaking this crime, the Western countries were supported by their people. Those people enjoy the freedom of decision ... In the end, they vote in elections to choose the governments they want, then pay taxes to willingly finance their policies,'' he said.

Al-Zawahri, 50, an Egyptian surgeon sentenced to death in Egypt for terrorist acts during the 1990s, is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan after the collapse of the Taliban regime.

Muslim activists have reported the death of al-Zawahri's family, saying they were killed by U.S. bombs in Kandahar, Afghanistan on Dec. 2. Last week, al-Zawahri's relatives in Cairo published a death notice for his wife and children.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat, al-Zawahri's manuscript was smuggled from Afghanistan to Pakistan and then brought to London by an unidentified Egyptian Islamic fundamentalist.

British and American intelligence agents trying to destroy the al-Qa'ida network worldwide have been forced to reassess the role of a London-based French Islamic radical who, according to the latest evidence, could have led them straight to the heart of the suicide hijacking conspiracy.

The man in question, Zacarias Moussaoui, was arrested in Minnesota on an immigration violation – nearly three weeks before the attacks on America – after raising suspicions at a local flying school. Previously, he lived in south London on and off for nine years, where he was a follower of the radical Islamic cleric Abu Qatada, recently named as the head of Osama bin Laden's network in Europe.

Mr Moussaoui's case has been a source of official embarrassment from the start. After slipping through the hands of British intelligence, he was never properly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation despite repeated warnings from French intelligence that he was a member of al-Qa'ida.

It has now emerged that Mr Moussaoui made numerous telephone calls to known associates of the 11 September hijack gang who were then living in Hamburg and received $15,000 (£10,500) in bank transfers from them shortly before setting off to Minnesota for flight simulation training.

That would suggest that he was himself earmarked to be one of the hijackers. French investigators believe he was asked to replace Ramsi Bin Al-Shibh, a Yemeni citizen who lived with Mohamed Atta and some of the other hijackers in Hamburg but failed on three occasions to obtain a US visa.

The FBI is convinced there was supposed to have been five hijackers on each of the four planes seized and crashed on 11 September. On one of them, United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco, there were just four – leading investigators to presume the existence of a "20th man" who never made it.

A French Moroccan, detained in the terrorism investigation since raising suspicions by seeking flight lessons a month before the 11 September attacks in America, has been charged.

US officials said Zacarias Moussaoui was charged with multiple conspiracy counts. They added that other co-conspirators have been identified by a grand jury. The conspiracy charges are the first criminal charges brought in the investigation

Moussaoui was detained on 17 August on immigration charges after officials at a Minnesota flight school, where he sought training, grew suspicious and called authorities. He has been held as a material witness someone with possibly important information in the investigation of the terrorist attacks.

The indictment is the first directly connected with the attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon.

Terror-Related Hoaxes Hit the Net

The image is chilling: A man stands atop the World Trade Center while in the background an American Airlines jet is seen speeding towards his tower, just moments away as he smiles for the camera. The only problem is it's a fraud!

But just a slightly closer look turns up problems. For one, the weather was much too warm on the day of the attack for the unidentified tourist to be wearing what appears to be winter clothing. Also, the plane that apparently has been digitally added to the image, depicts American Airlines Flight 11. That plane struck the north tower of the World Trade Center which does not have an observation deck. What's more, debunkers note, the observation deck on the south tower isn't open to tourists until 9:30 a.m. Planes had struck both towers by just after 9 a.m.

Perhaps the most widely distributed hoax e-mail claimed that Nostradamus, a 16th Century soothsayer, had predicted in 1654 that such an attack would occur. The e-mail contained flowery verses similar to the oracle's other supposed prophecies, including descriptions of "metal birds" and "twin brothers being torn apart." A quick search through any of the oracle's published works yields no prophecies with those phrases. And Nostradamus died in 1566.

Another e-mail hoax capitalizes on the renewed fears that terrorists may soon attack with biological weapons. The bogus e-mail warns recipients of a deadly virus that is sent by postal mail. The packages — typically blue envelopes from a so-called Klingerman Foundation — supposedly contain a mysterious deadly virus that have claimed the lives of 23 unsuspecting and unfortunate victims. While the threat of a biological attack may be all too real, the U.S. Postal Service noted — on May 25, 2000 — that the "Klingerman Virus" e-mail is a hoax.

Well, thankfully some hoax claims are extremely easy to debunk! None of the 4 planes involved in the terrorist attack on the US on September 11 2001 had a flight number of "Q33NY." In fact, the 4 planes involved were:

It's also worth mentioning that while the hoax flight number contains the letters "NY", presumably suggesting the plane was destined for New York, none of the planes actually involved in the attack were due to land at New York. In fact, the 4 planes were all heading to San Francisco and Los Angeles on the West Coast.

Unfortunately, it's too easy to imagine that this hoax was simply the product of someone playing with their word processor until they identified what seemed like a meaningful series of characters and claimed they constituted one of the flight numbers.

And what's with the Star Of David? Was the original author hoping to imply some kind of Israeli involvement in the attack? Or was it simply added to embellish the hoax? We'll probably never know, but one thing we can be absolutely certain of: this one's a hoax through and through.

Other hoaxes and Rumors

• CNN used old footage to fake images of 'Palestinians dancing in the street' after the terrorist attack on the USA.
• Donations can be sent to a group of hackers and others to aid in the search for Osama Bin Laden
• According to widely dispersed bit of gossip, a man trapped high in one of the falling World Trade Towers managed to ride parts of the collapsing building down to safety. In some accounts, he is said to have "curled himself into a ball," in others, to have ridden the swirling air currents and cascade of debris like a surfer, a piece of wood his boogie board to survival. Shaken but proud, he emerges from his wild ride with only minor injuries amounting to no more than scratches and a broken ankle. No one was reported to have been at the top of one of the World Trade Center Towers and rode the falling debris to safety.
• Thousands of Jews employed by companies housed in the World Trade Center stayed home from work on September 11, warned in advance of the impending attack on the World Trade Center.
• The U.S. has asked that everyone step out on their lawns tonight at 10:30 p.m. eastern time (7:30 p.m. Pacific) and light a candle. They will be taking a satellite picture of the U.S. and posting it on the news tomorrow morning. Please pass this on to as many people as possible.Unless every city in the country is going to extinguish all of its artificial lighting at just the right time, a satellite photo simply isn't going to pick up candlelight (and even then it's unlikely we could muster enough candles to produce light visible to an orbiting satellite).
• NASA has asked that everyone step out on their lawns tonight and light a candle. They will be positioning a satellite to take a picture of the U.S. and posting it on the news tomorrow morning. Please pass this on to as many people as possible. Same as the light a candle above.
• In response to Tuesday's terrorist attacks, Clear Channel, the world's largest radio network, has sent out a list of some 150 "lyrically questionable" songs by everyone from the Animals to the Zombies which it has banned its stations from playing. Some songs are overtly violent in their intent, but the majority simply contain metaphorical language or narrative aspects that connect uncomfortably with the tragedy. Clear Channel did not deny that such a list existed. They maintained, correctly, that "Clear Channel Radio has not banned any songs from any of its radio stations."
• Rumor has it that several Internet domain names related to the events of September 11 were registered well before that dark day, demonstrating that whoever registered them had foreknowledge of the attacks. This is a nothing story, promulgated by those looking for something sensational to write about.
• Thirty Ryder, Verizon, and U-Haul trucks have been stolen recently, presumably by terrorists who will use them in the ongoing attack on America. Spokespeople for all three companies named in the e-mail denied that any of their trucks went missing or had been stolen.

• Earlier that Morning Both Houses, of Congress, unanimously passed a $40 Billion Emergency spending package to fund rescue, security, and law enforcement efforts in the wake of Tuesday's Attacks
• Members of Congress promised to "stand together" and vowed revenge in the aftermath of terror attacks Tuesday that killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, in Washington and New York. Tuesday evening, lawmakers gathered on the steps of the Capitol for a symbolic display of unity and an apparently spontaneous chorus of "God Bless America."
• Giuliani was the first New York mayor in nearly 50 years to address the United Nations, delivering a passionate speech that strongly urged member nations to act and act together to end the global threat of terrorism.
• More than $1.5 billion has been raised for the relief effort on the September 11 attacks, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. It has been five weeks since the attacks and while donations have slowed, some groups are still reporting steady contributions.
• President Bush, anxious to deploy a missile shield long sought by Republicans, will soon give Russia notice that the United States is withdrawing from a landmark 1972 nuclear treaty, U.S. government officials said Tuesday. The pact bans missile defense systems.

Fallout from the Attacks

• Stock Markets around the world opened the week of the attacks and nearly all of them suffered considerable drops in prices.
• The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day down 684.81 at 8,920.70 -- a record one-day point drop
• The Dow lost 1,369.70 points for the week closing at 8235.81, when it reopened ater the attack. Whcih set the record for the Highest Point Drop for a one week period. That was a 14.26% loss which is the 5th largest decline in history.
• Major Airlines layoff tens of thousands and consider bankruptcy, many Airlines around the world also layoof workers and seek help for the lack of passengers and income.
• Layoffs felt by manufacturing, retail stores, travel industries, hotel chains, restaurants and others as customers are unlikely to spend money for sometime to come.
• Insurance Companies claim the bill for the destruction of four airplanes, the World Trade Center properties and a sizable chunk of the Pentagon is projected to exceed $25 Billion
• Officials say an early estimate of what it will cost to remove debris, pay overtime and rebuild subways and skyscrapers will be nearly $40 Billion
• Removal and Cleanup of the Debris of the World Trade Center, may take up to One Year.
• The estimate for repairing just the damaged portion of the historic, 50-year-old Pentagon will run into "the hundreds of millions
• Government warns more attacks possible; such as poisoning water supplies, trucks loaded with explosives or hazardous chemicals, bio chemical agents dropped from crop dusting planes, among others.
• Swiss national airline Swissair may file for bankruptcy, as part of strategy to keep flying. Shares in Swissair, which have halved in value since the September 11 terror attacks on the U.S.
• Experts say that the cost, of the September 11 Attacks, to the New York City Economy to be near $105 Billion by June 2003. The trade center's destruction cost $6.7 billion; $12 billion was lost in computers and other office equipment; rebuilding the complex will cost $5.3 billion; and the city's economy will lose $11 billion in spending by the thousands of trade center victims.
