It was the first combat-related death in the war against terror . -- Cause: Air crash November 25, 2001 -- Mission: CIA operative Johnny Micheal "Mike" Spann is killed during a prison uprising, after gathering intelligence from Taliban prisoners in Mazar-e Sharif. -- Cause: Enemy fire December 5, 2001 -- Mission: Three U.S. Special Forces soldiers and five Afghan opposition fighters are killed when a 2,000-pound, satellite-guided bomb from a U.S. B-52 misses its i ntended target north of Kandahar. All were from the Army's 3rd Battalion, the Special Forces group at Fort Campbell, Kentucky . -- Cause: Friendly fire January 4, 2002 -- Mission: Army Special Forces Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman dies while on a mission to coordinate with local tribal elements in the vicinity of Gardez and Khowst in eastern Afghanistan. -- Cause: Enemy fire January 9, 2002 -- Mission: A KC-130 aerial tanker crashes into the mountains of western Pakistan while landing in Shamsi, killing all seven Marines on board. -- Cause: Air crash January 20, 2002 -- Mission: A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter used to transport heavy equipment and supplies crashes, killing two Marines. The crash appears to be the result of a mechanical failure . -- Cause: Air crash March 2, 2002 -- Mission: A U.S. Special Forces soldier is killed by enemy fire during an assault on Taliban and al Qaeda fighters regrouping in eastern Afghanistan. -- Cause: Enemy fire March 4, 2002 -- Mission: A Navy SEAL falls from helicopter and dies in enemy territory. December 29, 2001 A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter makes a "hard landing" in a desert area northwest of the southern Afghan city of Kandahar. Four Marines on board are uninjured. January 9, 2002 A KC-130 refueling plane crashes in western Pakistan, killing all seven U.S. Marines on board. January 20, 2002 A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashes in a remote region of northern Afghanistan, killing two U.S. Marines and injuring five others. February 22, 2002 U.S. Army helicopter crashes at sea in Philippines killing eight American crew and two soldiers on board.
